Nunslinger is the story of Sister Thomas Josephine, a nun wrongly accused of murder and running from the law (and, in time, various others) across 19th century America. A compelling chase western with fantastically rich portrayals of both people and country, it refuses to grant the reader any lasting reassurance re. the moral standing of any of the recurring characters STJ encounters. We have to agonise with her as she decides how and where to place her trust. It’s never obvious, which is great, and makes for a nicely disconcerting tension that builds and builds. And it binds us to STJ, because it helps us understand the power of her faith.
